Abstract: In 1970 we began to build up our own collection of algae cultures at the Kohlenstoffbiologische Forschungsstation e. V. in Dortmund. Our primary intention was to have new isolates available in order to select more efficient strains for the mass cultivation of microalgae, especially for use in the tropics and subtroics. After the Dortmund Institute was taken over by the Gesellschaft für Strahlen- and Umweltforschung mbH in Munich as the Department of Algal Research and Algal Technology, new goals were defined including the production of valuable organic substances from microalgae, and the treatment of waste water in algal ponds. Algae strains were selectively isolated and subjected to comparative studies for these purpose as well. Responsibility for a microalgae project abroad as well as expeditions undertaken by Eberhard Hegewald possible to isolate numerous strains of microalgae from Hungary, Peru, Bali and India. Besides the routine research programme of the Institute, part of our isolates were studied taxonomically, resulting in more than 50 publications. Prof. E. Schnepf (Heidelberg), who examined the fine structure of some of the algae, and Prof. Dr. H. Kneifel, (Jülich) who studied the chemistry of organic compounds, both contributed substantially to this work. A list of publications concerning strains from our collection ist appended to this paper. The collection mainly contains coccal green algae and in particular representatives of the genus $\underline{Scenedesmus}$.
